History of frog play: Barrel play, also known as frog play, is an ancient Greek game of skill known as “casse pot”, played with amphorae into which flat stones were thrown. After invading Greece, the Romans brought the game back to Rome, where it was a great success.
On their return from the Mediterranean, the Vikings brought the idea of the game back to Normandy. At the time, cider was stored in barrels, not in amphorae like Mediterranean wines, so “casse pot” became simply “le jeu de Tonneau”. Brought back into fashion under Louis XIV with the name “jeu de Grecque”, it accompanied the French troops. The writer Scarron, describes it in his correspondence and has a lot of fun with it.
